Where Are They Now?

Unfortunately, the government of Ghana does not provide public schools for all villages. Therefore, local community members will often create a private school in their village and charge parents a small fee to send their children to this school rather than have the child walk miles to the nearest public school.  To obtain teachers, the community will hire recent senior high school graduates. They will select the teacher based upon his/her high school grade in the subject matter they will be teaching at the school.  These students make very little money (about $2.00 per day) but it is a job that gives them prestige in their family and community and it is also an advantage on a university application form.
